I booked a very similar tour from Richard on a booking site for people wanting tours in various cities. It was a private (up to 2 persons without extra charge) 4.5 hour custom tour of the Panama City area. We were coming to Panama City on a cruise (after Canal Transit) and I had some specific things I wanted to see. The cruise line excursions focused mostly on the Canal, but after a day of transiting it, I wasn’t interested in those excursions. I discussed very generally what I wanted to see in Panama City before the cruise. Our ship docked at the “Pacific Cruise Terminal” on Perico Island, which is a long causeway away from the city. This terminal is new, and in the past there has been lots of confusion over where people can meet drivers. I’m happy to report that the terminal is now open and roads to it are in place. Rich suggested meeting at the large, usually colorful “Vida Bella” sign on Perico Island. We could either walk 10 minutes from the ship or take a short inexpensive cab ride there from the port terminal. (Now that the roads are open to the port, it’s possible a terminal pickup may be offered in the future.)
Richard met us promptly and off we went. We saw and did a lot, and Rich told us a lot about what we saw. He seemed to know a LOT about the city and country, and knew how to navigate in various areas of the city. Driving and parking were tricky in the old part of Panama City (Casco Viejo) but he managed. When he found out I was curious about a lighthouse I had seen from the Bridge of Americas, he told me he thought he could get me close to it, and he did! I had not expressed interested in that pre-trip, and I appreciate that he was willing to take me there. We saw monuments, great views of the beautiful “corkscrew” building and Frank Gehry’s colorful museum architecture, visited places in Balboa, skirted Panama Viejo, saw San Blas creations without going to San Blas, and admired the Bridge of Americas from a viewpoint. We learned about the Panama Canal, history, and culture. Rich was personable, attentive, and more than willing to accommodate my slightly ununsual requests as well as suggest seeing some things we had not thought to ask for.
